The specific purpose is to inform the public about how valentine’s day has changed over the years that it has been around. Hearts, chocolate, flowers, cupid, and love all have one thing in common: Valentine’s day.
Valentine’s day has changed over the years from when it first was started and celebrated. It wasn’t always the love holiday as it is know as now. Valentine’s day is named after the Catholic saint Valentine. It is believed that Emperor Claudia II outlawed marriage for single soldiers. Valentine didn’t like this idea so he would marry people of the Roman empire in secret. Old traditions of Valentine’s day just to be a little bit more brutal than today. For Valentine’s day in Rome, a priest would sacrifice a goat, for fertility, and a dog, for purification.
The priest would then take the goat hide and make it into trips, dip it in the sacrificial blood and go into town and gently smack the women with the strips. It was believed that this would make you more fertile for the up coming year. Valentine’s day didn’t really get celebrated until the 17th century. By the middle of the 18th century, it was common for friends and lovers to exchange little tokens for their affection. The oldest Valentine’s day gift was a poem that was sent from Charles, Duke of Orleans, to his wife, while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London after he was captured during battle.
