Onee of the main male figures, Troy, is the embodiment of black Americans in a predominantly white society and the struggles that he faced represents those that the entire black American co immunity had faced, while, his son and other main male character, Core represents the next genre Zion of black Americans who tried to overcome the differences that their parents and socio TTY imposed on them.
August Willow’s is a play that revolves around the Manson family, and even more so around the two main male characters, Troy and Core, their fragile relationship , and the figurative and literal fences that play a crucial role in their lives to convey to the readers that generational gaps can and will lead to unnecessary conflict. At the beginning of the play, Core is shown to be a high school student with g DOD prospects, particularly as a college football recruit, while Troy is a grown man tit a meager job as a garbage man who blames his shortcomings on his race.
It is made clear a t the very beginning that Core and Troy are not on good terms after Core questioned whether Troy liked him and was told, “Like you? Who the hell says I got to like you? ” (Wilson 37). This exemplify sees one of the many emotional barriers that the two faced on a daily basis, and as Troy did n tot have a father Shaffer 2 around when he was a child, he did not have a strong foundation and understand ending of how to treat and raise Core as a son.
Troy is under the impression that the predominate antsy white society ad conspired to keep him from being acknowledged as a talented baseball p layer and feared the same would happen to Core as a football player if he were to allow Core to co entire with football. He demanded that Core finish his vocational training so, ” That way [Core] have something can’t nobody take away from [Core]” (Wilson 35). Although done w tit, presumably, good intentions, Trots stubbornness due to his experiences as a young man ultimately keeps Core from attending college and playing football.
Troy’s inflexibility and ignore once combined are enough to motivate Core to leave the bounds Of the fence that surrounds he Macon house. To various members of the Manson family, the fence that surrounds their ho SE may exist for different reasons, but in the end, it exists as an attempt to keep their fragile e family together. To Rose, the wife of Troy and mother to Core, the fence outside of the house r presents her family; the family she spent years building, and as Bono, one of Trots friends from prison, put into words, ” Some people build fences to keep people out… ND other people build fences to keep people in. Rose wants to hold on to you all. She loves you” (Wilson 61). Genera Ill, fences are seed to keep things and people out of space that is considered personal, but t o Rose, who grew up in a family of strangers, the fence was her way of keeping her precious FAA mill within her reach. To Troy, however, after he learned of the death of his mistress, a fence was his way of keeping death out while he tried to make amends for his countless mistakes.
He takes an approach similar to that of a Greek theater and proclaims, “Alright… Mr.. Death I’m goanna take and build me a fence around this yard. See? I’m goanna build me a fence around what belongs to me. And then want you to stay on the other side” (Wilson 77). Trot y, who had taken Shaffer 3 advantage of his family kindness and faced the consequences of doing so, k new that his time to remedy his mistakes was quickly ticking away and builds a mental and physic al fence to keep death at bay.
As opposed to the begin inning of the play when Troy bragged ABA UT his struggle and his overpowering of death on his (almost) deathbed, Troy was far more fearful I of the end and regretful of his treatment of his family. In the end, Core leaves the safety and familiarity that comes from within the f once to avoid the conflict between him and Troy, which was nothing but a daily routine for the two.
