Comic Relief
humorous scene which alleviates tension in a story

Conceit
an elaborate, fanciful metaphor, especially of a strained or far-fetched nature.

Connotation
the associated or secondary meaning of a word or expression in addition to its explicit or primary meaning.

Consonance
Repetition of consonant sounds in a phrase or passage.

Counterpoint
uses contrast of elements within music or poetry

Couplet
a pair of successive lines of verse, especially a pair that rhyme and are of the same length.

Denotation
a word’s literal and primary meaning

Deus Ex Machina
Unrealistic intervention in a story to rescue characters from their conflicts.

Diction
the choice and use of words and phrases in speech or writing

discordant sounds

Doppleganger
an alter ego or ghostly counterpoint of a character. Also an apparition or double of a living person

Dramatic Monologue
a poem written in the form of a speech of a character to an imaginary audience.

Dynamic Character
someone who undergoes an important internal change because of the action in the plot

Elegy
a poem of serious reflection, typically a lament for the dead

Enjambement
When one line flows into another in a poem

Epiphany
a sudden insight or realization that changes a character’s understanding

story written in the form of letters

shows belief that man is in control of his fate

A character that serves by contrast to highlight or emphasize opposing traits in another character.

hint of what is to come in a literary work
